Opens at nightfall Closes at Dawn Taking your first step into the circus gates was like walking in a dream. As you buy your ticket and head into the grounds of the circus, you cannot help but feel dazzled. Every tent was decorated in black and white stripes, and all around you is nothing but the same. No colour, or shades. Simply black and white, even the freaks performing outside donned this colour scheme. It doesn't make it any less vivid. The stripes swirled and waves around you, hypnotizing your eyes in each and every direction. The stalls lining the pathways welcomed you with sweet smells, exotic objects and smooth music. You look down, and realise even the path on the grass is white, leading you towards a large black and white tent. If you looked closely, you could see the flickers of white balls of light dancing around it. They floated effortlessly around the bigtop, graceful and soft. You felt the anticipation begin to boil over you as you neared the entrance to the bigtop. You looked around you, the faces of the people mirroring your own excitement and wonder. A warm light suddenly fell upon your face, as the curtains drew back and you found yourself dazed. Colour, hit you like the wind, as it began to pour out through the curtains. Reds, yellows, greens, blues everywhere there was colour. It was like a fantasy, being swept off your feet and entering into another world. You found yourself unable to look away from the acrobats high in the sky, or from the clowns doing silly tricks below on stage. You watched as the freaks took your breath away... you watched as the lights began to fade... and the show was about to being...
It was the end of another show, and he watched as the customers began to spill from the circus grounds as it neared dawn. The night was nothing but thrills and enchantment, their ring master Calloway really knew how to put on a show. The crowd cheered and roared for them. Calloway always loved the people, behind his stern and strict exterior, he was a people person. He and his wife had always wanted a large family, and now they did. The circus was family to all those wonderfully weird. To those who were shunned and judged by society, this was a home waiting for them. Where people didn't see them as crippled or strange, but as unique and beautiful. It was a place he had always dreamed of, a place, he thought he belonged.
He watched the people descend down the hill, and return to their normal homes in their normal lives. He watched from behind the curtains, as people laughed and talked about their astonishing time at the circus. He watched the children jump in the air like the acrobats, and some pretending to fly. Soon the gates would be shut, and they would all be off to their tents for a rest, before the next show. One more night here and it would be moving again. He felt a soft touch on his nose, and he looked up to see the light snow beginning to fall from the dark sky. The lights made it look luminous, and he reached up to touch the falling flakes.
A chill ran down him, as he stood outside in his black sleeveless tailcoat, his top hat fixed on his head and his black trousers. He welcomed the cool air. Usually after shows, he would get hot, and stand by the curtain to cool down. He was the Illusionist of the circus, and his magic was used to create a lot of the circus's atmosphere. He enjoyed the break after the show. He was still learning his magic, and it did take it out of him. He loved his magic, it was like a security blanket. He couldn't imagine not being with it. He knew his 'family' was a little put off by his new hobby. All except a few...
He wasn't a people person, not like his adopted father Calloway, but there were a few he accepted, and held them close to him. Evra, the snake boy. Not only is his adopted brother, but also his best friend. The two had remained close, and worked well together. The snake boy was timid and awkward, lacking confidence due to his condition. Yet he accepted him whole heartedly. And then there was her. Elizabeth DeVonne. His adopted sister. She was completely different to him. So full of life and charm. Everywhere she went she brightened the room. Her smile haunted his mind, and her voice was a soft melody in his ears. He had been distant towards her, and at times, cold. Things seemed to be different now, it was no longer the innocent sibling relationship. It confused him so, how she could affect him in such a way. He'd tried to keep his distance. But like darkness and light. One cannot live without the other...

She didn't know what it was about seeing the awed faces of those whom came to see their show. It was satisfactory to see how amazed the crowd could become by the elaborate circus and freak show which was only to the freaks, their entire lives. It was their home, their job, their family, their passion and love. For as far back as she would wish to remember, it was all that she ever had. When she was young, she was jealous of having to share it with those on the outside. She hadn't been allowed to take place in the shows, and would watch only by sneaking up in the rafters. Of course, every rule had a reason behind it and she had experienced that reason first hand. The crowds weren't always pleasant. But it was the look on a child's face as they left the show, attempting to reenact all that they had seen with their wild energy. It was the small girls who tried to dance like her, and the young boys whom came up to her with flowers they picked straight from the grass outside the tents. It was not a greedy feeling, but a humble one. It reminded her of her own innocence, which was slowly slipping away.
Elizabeth had always been the angel of Ethel and Calloway's hearts. Her two parents, quite the strange pair but yet their love went above and beyond all. Over ten years ago, they adopted three young children. First, the middle son, Evra: left behind by his family when he was only a babe and raised since then by his new family. Then they found Lucifer, the eldest. He had been the leader of their trio, unless Elizabeth had anything to say about it. She was the last to be adopted, and also the youngest. The little sister whom they loved to torture, and loved to get them back. Growing up she adored bossing her older brothers around. They were her best friends and only friends, and when they weren't filling each other's pillowcases with dirt and mud, they were inseparable. But no matter how many pranks she could pull on the boys, she was always sweet and innocent in their parents' eyes. Truthfully, she could never intentionally harm a fly and that transpired with her into her adult life. She was meant to be the perfect girl and one day a perfect wife. Ethel taught her how to cook, clean, act just as a lady should. She was light itself, a blonde-haired beauty whom moved and danced with utter grace.
But perfection was not something in any freak's reach. Elizabeth's downfall would be the one she held dearest to her heart: the boy who was raised as her brother. Now a man grown, as she was a young woman. Both very much aware of how they were not siblings, no matter how much it was pushed onto them. There was something different. A feeling which showed in their eyes each time they smirked at each other from across a room. A secret that could never be told.
Her breath came out in a fog as she stepped into the cold air, quietly sneaking from the back of the big top where the freaks were celebrating a night well done. The noise of their shouts and music faded slightly into the distance as the curtain closed behind her. It was snowing, the flakes landing gently against her pale skin covered in goosebumps. She hadn't changed from her stage outfit, a sparkling black and red top which revealed her arms and stomach and small, tight shorts which sparkled in the same colors. It was an outfit much different from the ones she normally wore, but that night her performance had been mostly acrobatic. She needed a free range of motion without clothes suffocating her. Her smile grew as she saw him, his back faced to her as he enjoyed his escape outside. A break well needed for the man whom carried all the weight on his shoulders.
Her hands gently came to rest on his shoulders. She didn't say words, she never needed to. But her hands touched him in the slow, seductive way that said all that needed to be conveyed. Her adoration, her teasing of what was forbidden. She slid a hand down his bare arm, enough heat still on her hand to be noticeable against his cold skin.

He watched the lights in the distance from the town. He watched as they went off one by one, families all tucked in their beds and sleeping. His family were all up celebrating, enjoying the last few hours, until they too would go to bed and sleep until it was time to get ready once more. He didn't stick around long in the celebrations, preferring to spend the end of the working night by himself. Unlike many of the other freaks, he hated the fact that they were performing for the likes of the 'normies'. He despised them, going through their ordinary lives, oblivious to the hardship his family faced. They came to be entertained and thrilled. Came to gawk at the weird and ugly, and fear the unknown. He liked it when they feared him and his power. He wasn't weak like the rest of them.
But there was times when he would catch the awe and fascination from the crowd. It confused him how at one point they feared him, and then the next completely taken by him. He tried to avoid the groups of young ladies who had waited for him at the end of the show, and the young men who praised and asked to be his student. He was cold, and distant when it came to the crowd. He was a recluse, quiet man who kept to himself. But that didn't mean he didn't care and love his family. They knew what he was like, and accepted him either way. He was happy in his family, and couldn't imagine a life without them... but he was a greedy man, and he couldn't help but want something... more.
He felt a tingle going up his arm, and a warmth against his cold skin. He knew exactly who it was, for there was only one person who knew about his whereabouts, and how he liked to watch the world outside after a show. "You'll catch a cold if you stay out here" he spoke, but his eyes remained glued on the horizon, as the light from the sun began to peak through the trees. He didn't move away from her, she was one of the few people he allowed to be so close to him. He'd watched her performance from behind the stage, watching as she performed the most breath-taking bends, twists and turns, she danced like a graceful swan. His eyes remained on her during her performance. Never looking away from the angel on the stage.

He was nothing that she was supposed to be, but at the same time he was everything. He was cold where she was kind, brooding where she was bright. To her, he was the only thing that mattered. They both risked much when they spent these quiet moments in privacy. It was much more than their families disapproval that they would receive. But he was like an addiction, from the moment things began to change between the two of them, she couldn't get enough. For a time, she had felt as if life was just moving through the motions. Carrying on with performing, sleeping, cooking, cleaning, repeat, until they all grew old and miserable. She hadn't argued with it. In fact she had been content, finding utter happiness in having her family being all that she needed. But these moments was when she felt alive. When she was doing what was forbidden or frowned upon. When she was careless and free and most importantly, with him.
Her eyes flickered past him, to the lights he was staring out into. They ticked like a clock, going out on by one as the lives of ordinary people took a rest for the night, while their family would be awake and partying for hours. She could hear momentary shouts of panic followed by laughter coming from inside as Axel set something on fire. Ethel was probably scolding him, but unable to hold in laughter as she had a few drinks. Evra was playing his music, sloppily as he was never able to control his liquor. She would never trade away her wild and crazy family. Even if no one else could understand or fathom them. They were special, and sometimes needed to be protected from those that would laugh and prey on them. She didn't have to face much of what the others did. She didn't have any deformity or things that visibly made her strange. Rather than scaring people, she lured them in like a siren whom put you under her spell. But that didn't make her blind to the ones whom laughed at her family. Just like she wasn't blind to the ones whom were frightened by Lucifer.
But she was never frightened. She was intrigued, amazed by the magic and power he had. She could watch him for endless hours and never grow uninterested. She couldn't be scared of someone whom would never hurt her. In her mind, he was dominant. He was the one whom knew the wrong from right, the one who held all the answers. When he whispered to her in his silken voice, he could nearly convince her to do anything. Calloway was the ringleader of their circus, but Lucifer was the one who truly was in control. "That wouldn't be too bad. Our mother will make you slave over me until I'm better," she teased quietly. She smiled, stepping around to stand next to him. He was a foot taller than her now, even though she could remember a time when she mocked him for being an inch shorter than her. She didn't know when exactly he had sprouted into a giant and she stayed an imp, but she had to tilt her head back to look up at him.

He was once an ordinary boy. He grew up in an ordinary home, with his parents and baby sister. There was nothing physically strange about him, not like most of the other freaks. Oh no, for his deformity dwell inside him. It was lying in wait, festering and toying with his unstable mind with the promise of breaking him when the time came. He believed it was the desire for power, the power which granted him strength and independence. He believed magic was the source of his cure, the medicine which would fix his mind. It was the curse upon him. Magic always came with a price. He had not know what it was until it was too late. The price of magic... was his own sanity. He put on an act to the others, feeling nothing but anger recently. He was nothing but the shadow of the man he was before. One who cared and worked hard. A man who wanted nothing more than to help and enjoy time with his family. Now, he was alone. Well... almost.
He scoffed as he leaned against the large wooden pole which held up the big top, and finally his eyes laid on her. She who didn't let him go, who wasn't afraid of him, who saw something else in him many had forgotten. She couldn't let go. Of course, she knew where he would be. They had moments like these, just the two of them. Each aware of the difference one felt for the other. No longer siblings. But something else. He crossed his arms, and raised his eyebrow "They wouldn't risk their star act becoming ill" his lips curled into a grin, as he teased her back. Even as children they would tease and play with one another, that was one thing that didn't seem to change between them. "Besides, who'd want to look over a snot nose brat like you?" he playfully added, a slight chuckle escaping his lips as he watched her closely. His piercing two coloured eyes gazing into her own Hazel orbs.

She knew that a lot had changed inside of Lucifer. He wasn't the same as he was before, and it was something all of their family would whisper about when they thought he couldn't hear. They weren't sure exactly what kind of man he was becoming. But there was one constant trait that when they were together, he never strayed from. How much he loved to tease and play with her. Growing up there hadn't been a day which went by that they didn't play together, whether it was pulling pranks or roughhousing. During her bossier days she would even get him to play dolls with her. Well, he may not play with her dolls anymore but they still could become quite immature. It was only a week before that some of the maintenance men whom traveled with them got quite mouthy after they found the stack of hay they had just finished piling all over because of their fighting in it. The only thing about it that changed, was the new feeling that it gave her. The look behind their eyes when they met. How sometimes it wasn't merely innocent.
Like right now, as she found herself smirking at him with that playful yet enticing look in her hazel eyes. Sometimes it wasn't only about making the other laugh, but teasing them in a different sense. They were both aware of the strange attraction and Elizabeth was no longer shy about it. In fact, she loved to watch the way he reacted. There was no feeling like it when she was able to make his skin get hot, or strip the calmness from his eyes. She loved it when he dared to cross the line between them, and she knew just how to fish that part out of him. She loved to play with him and with their family so close but yet preoccupied with each other, it was the perfect combination of private and dangerous. Enough to give her that rush which she came out here looking for. "Oh, and here I was thinking you'd love your chances alone with me.." she sighed, looking away with a mischievous smile.

He flinched at her comment about them being alone. It was true, they had been alone plenty of times before, and had been spending a lot more time in one another's company. He could be working one day and she'd keep him company. There were times when she was practising and he'd come by and watch her. Not that he would ever admit it, so he would always give the excuse 'He was on a break'. He glared at her mischievous smirk, and he knew what she was playing at. She wanted to catch him off guard, she wanted a reaction from him. He was always known be to a stoic man, but there were times when his emotions betrayed him and reacted. He hated the way she affected him, so much so that he wanted to hate her at times. He wanted to be able to push her away, to help her make sense and find someone else. At the same time, he couldn't even think of such things. She was his, his friend, his tool, his puppet... and his... he didn't know exactly.
He watched as she played along in their little game. But it was also known, how much Joker loved to win. And it certainly wouldn't change because of her or their little 'game'. Oh no. He was determined to win. He pushed off from the pole, and stalked towards her. He didn't say a word, as he proceeded to corner her between the tent and it's large wooden mast. He wouldn't allow her to run, not yet anyway. His hands remained in his pockets, as he looked at her. His eyes wandered down her small frame, studying her closely, until his eyes finally locked onto her's once more and he leaned closer. His face was but a breath away, as he grinned cooly "And why would I want that?"

Of all the games they had ever played, this one would be her favorite. She knew him, perhaps not all of him, but more than anyone else. She knew how to push his buttons to make him give in to the emotions and urges he felt. There was undeniable tension between the two of them and it only grew stronger when they acted on it. He played with her, keeping from touching her despite how much she wanted to feel his hands on her waist. He would get so painfully close but nothing would ever come of it. They spoke empty promises of something more but yet neither crossed that line. It always left her mind a jumbled mess, her knees weak, but most of all it left her even more addicted and obsessed with him. He controlled her like his little puppet but yet she never saw it in that light. Because she had him just as much wrapped around her finger as he did her. Elizabeth's breath caught in her throat as she was backed into the cold mast, the snow on the wood melting onto her back. She craved for whatever warmth he still had as his body pinned her in the corner, the fog from their breath in the chill air dancing together. She controlled herself, standing back against him with certainty. He loved to win their little games, and she didn't know whether to love or hate his mocking smirk when he did. Her eyes betrayed her by looking at his lips, her own spread open slightly. She had to contain herself, forcing her eyes back up to his as she tried to match his collected expression. "Well.. if I'm stuck laying in bed I'd need someone to keep me busy, right?"

He couldn't help the small chuckle which escaped his lips as he listened to her. He underestimated her again, she could play his games well. That's probably why she interested him so much. He couldn't say that about many people. He only let those he trusted close. And then there were those who knew him better than most. She was defiantly one, and she knew how he worked. To everyone else, she was the innocent and naive angel, who could do no wrong. He knew better. He knew her just as much as she knew him. Many would deem it wrong how 'close' they were. They were raised as siblings, and were expected to act that way. Calloway had warned her about coming close to him, warned her that he was no longer the man he once was. True. but that didn't stop them. He'd tried in vain as well, but she was like a siren, pulling him in with her chilling charm.
He tilted his head at her comment, his grin remained as he watched her "Oh?" he spoke, cutting the silence which had dawned on them. He caught her eyes looking down at his lips, and he teased her by licking them. "Aren't sick little girls suppose to be in bed resting?" he placed one of his hands on the mast behind her, caging her in. "Those are some big words Elizabeth. And they can mean different things" it was his turn to look down at her lips, before finally looking back at her "You're smart mouth will get you in trouble someday"

"I like trouble." Elizabeth smiled at him, resting her head back against the mast. She could feel his hand now in her hair, and she nibbled down on her lip as her eyes dragged along him again. They were the only ones who really understood each other. The others saw him as this dark, stoic creature who couldn't be trusted. They could only see her as naive, a little girl who needed protection. To be protected from him even, as she had heard all the warnings of how he had changed. What would they do had they figured out they weren't simply 'friends'? Or that they had cast this far away from siblings. Calloway would lose his mind, and Ethel would beg for her to stay away from him. It was after he learned magic that they tried their hardest to keep their little girl from falling prey to his charm. It never stopped her, and in fact the way they were meant to be separated only further pushed her to get close to him. They were attracted to one another, more than just a physical sense. There was no amount of pushing away that wouldn't result in them pulling right back together.
Somehow it had brought them to this, teasing each other about what should have been forbidden. A thought that should have never crossed their minds now permanently lingered. Even when they were this close, she wanted him even closer. She could feel the urge rushing throughout her to pull him to her, to feel his body pressed against her own. She never felt this way before, not until him. These were feelings she kept herself from but now all she wanted was to fully indulge in them. She rested her hand on his arm that locked her in, slowly sliding her fingers up and down. "I like getting into trouble with you."

A chill ran down his arm, and down his spine as he felt her touch his skin. Even in the bitter cold she still felt warm. Her fingers worked their magic on him, tempting him into giving in. He wanted to, just listening to her silken voice and words made him want to shut her mouth with his own. But he was a stubborn one, just like her. It was both a curse and blessing. His eyes closed as he allowed himself to remain in the moment, her fingers gliding up and down his arm, inching closer and closer to him. He didn't know wither he wanted to bat her hand away, or grab it and bring her closer. His hand remained on the mast behind her, his fingers curling into a fist. No... not yet. He couldn't give in just yet. He knew the game she was playing at, and he had been playing it for a long time. The two had danced around each other for years, sneaking hidden glances and brushes of skin. Now there was no one to interrupt them, no one to put an end to this maddness.
His eyes opened once more, fighting with the last of his determination. He leaned closer, his lips inching closer to her own, but his eyes remained on her. He could feel the heat from her breath fan his face, her lips enticing close. He couldn't hear the commotion from the other freaks. He couldn't even see the snow. All that he focused on was her. He moved, as if to plant a tender kiss on her lips, but instead, his head moved to the side, brushing against her own as he whispers softly in her ear "You may regret that someday" he purred.

She wanted to end this game. To put a stop to the madness between cat and dog, chasing each other though they wouldn't even know what to do if they caught their prize. Yet she refused to be the one whom finally cracked. He would be able to smirk at her, to mock with how she couldn't resist his temptations. No, she wanted to be the one who earned her smugness. For when she finally reeled him in right where she wanted him, it would be with satisfaction. Undoubtedly, she noticed all the women who fell for him. They would wait for him after the shows, some even tried their chances while the crowds still rolled in. They all had things she could never have. The face of a siren, rather than hers of a porcelain baby doll. Long legs under their rich clothing, the voice of a seductress. Yet he never sparred them a glance. He saved his lustful and greedy looks for her. She didn't know why it was.. but she was determined to keep him coming back for more.
Her heart skipped beats as his lips edged closer. For a moment she thought she could nearly taste them against hers. It was a trick of the mind as he toyed with her. While she loved it, at the same time she hated him. It should have been impossible to make another being feel so vulnerable. A quiet sigh fell from her lips as he whispered in her ear, his words sending chills down her spine. She shut her eyes, fully indulging in their closeness. She didn't want him to pull away.. so she lifted her leg slightly, her ballet slippers rubbing against the leg of his pants. She stopped when her bare thigh was against the side of his, gently pulling him closer. Elizabeth turned her head, her warm breath tickling against his ear. "I'm willing to take that chance."

The man never wanted to lose. He was stubborn and determined in everything he did. He never wanted to give anyone the satisfaction of winning over him, allowing them to mock him. But there was always a first... He felt her leg stroke up his own, it was positively mind blowing, how only a simple touch could affect him so. His eyes closed once more, as his breath hitched in his mouth. He grunted softly as he felt her breath against his face. He knew she'd won. This time around, she had succeeded in luring him out from his stoic and emotionless shell, to a man who flinched and arched into her touch. He hated it, the way it made him weak and vulnerable. But he also couldn't help the passion and excitement it brought. His hand came out to stabilize him, as her leg tugged him closer. His chest brushed against her own, as their bodies pressed against one another. Damn her flexibility. He moved his head away from the crook of her neck and faced her. His nose brushing against her own.
He realized, he liked the way she was caged in by him, she couldn't escape him. How she welcomed him, a man who was deemed as dangerous by a few of the freaks. His breath started to regain its deep rate, as his hands cornered her against the mast. She had him where she wanted. And now it was his turn. His hand suddenly snapped downwards, grabbing her thigh with his cold hands and pulling her against him. He couldn't take it anymore, he wanted his high. His eyes burned into hers and he looked down at their pressed bodies "Then take it" he moves, his head leaning forward and pressing his lips against her own in a passionate kiss. He loved the taste of her, her smell and radiance. He held her close, as they kissed under the dim glow of the sunrise.

Before this change in them, Elizabeth had never thought of lust. She hadn't the desire to share a kiss, closeness, not even brief touches and brushes of the skin. For a while with her stories and imagination she had been a hopeless romantic, waiting for the day she'd be swept off her feet and in love. As she grew older, she forgot all about those trivial little things. When young men whom came to their shows tried to win her heart, she always felt flattered, but never thought of giving it a chance. She tried to focus her mind away from impure thoughts or even something as sweet as sharing a kiss, because she was meant to be innocent, chaste. But now, it was all her mind occupied itself with. Whether it was when they were together or apart, she got lost in her little daydreams. In the beginning, it was harmless. She would have her little fantasies of romance with him, of dancing and kissing under the moonlight, holding hands. Then, he started to play into her obsession. They would exchange knowing glances, he would set her skin alive and on fire with his idle brushes. It changed from innocence, to something lascivious. It became an addiction to feel him, of wanting to taste him, wanting everything from him that she would kill for had he turned his attention to someone else.
At first, it was full of lust. She gasped, her breath hitching in her throat as his cold hand pressed against her thigh. As he pulled her closer, and she was aware of every place where their bodies touched. She wanted more. For a moment, she was lost in a fantasy of undoing every button on his vest, pushing it off his shoulders to reveal his bare chest. She wanted him to pick her up right there, and hold her against the mast as he ravished her outside in the snowfall. But as soon as his lips moved in, she was that teenage girl who wanted nothing more than to hold his hand, to be the one he whispered sweet nothings to. Their game of teasing, provoking, and hinting came to an end as she had definitely won. Yet it was as she said before, that she wasn't sure what she would do with her prize.
Her cheeks flushed considerably, a bright red against pale skin that stuck out like a sore thumb in the white storm. For a second, she was staring in shock as his lips pressed against hers. But when she truly felt that connection between them, it lured her out of that panic which was experiencing her first kiss. She closed her eyes, her lips that lacked experience kissing back. It took a moment for her to catch his rhythm but when she did, their kiss was passionate. It was like feeling alive for the very first time. It was an indescribable feeling that had her forget about anything existing but the two of them. It had her falling even farther for him where this time, there was no going back. Her arms moved around his neck, holding him tight as they shared this moment that she never wanted to see end.
